The Loved One Presents an Artist Talk & Book Signing with Artist and Writer Steven Seidenberg and Professor Carolyn White
Los Angeles, CA – The Loved One presents an artist talk and book signing on December 17, 2026, with writer and lens-based artist Steven Seidenberg and Boston University Boston University Professor of Archaeology and History of Art & Architecture Carolyn White about the intersection of art-making and social sciences and how photography can transcend the expected boundaries of documentation.
Working at the intersection of photographic inquiry and anthropological study, Seidenberg and White’s collaborative work focuses on domestic environments and material culture of sites around the world that are often overlooked. At The Loved One, both will discuss their collaborative relationship to image and interpret domestic spaces and sites of impermanence. Together they explore a novel coordination of fine art with the social sciences, allowing Seidenberg’s compositional and aesthetic imperatives to frame the knowledge base of White’s anthropological and material culture concerns. Their subjects include the ways in which human beings, including migrants and marginalized populations, create spaces of habitation that are often abandoned or in contention with larger socio-political histories and contemporary realities.
While examining their broader collaborations, the talk will highlight a number of their specific projects, ranging from The Architecture of Silence, which documents the abandoned structures and surrounding environments of the failed post-war land reform movement known as the Riforma Fondiaria in Puglia and Basilicata regions in Italy, to Kanazawa Vacancy, which documents akiya (vacant houses) and akichi (vacant lots) and the de-densification of Japan’s second largest urban center (after Kyoto) to escape firebombing during WWII in Kanazawa, Japan.
The Loved One will feature several of Seidenberg’s books, including his photography book The Architecture of Silence published by Constrasto Books and his latest book of poetry Coda published by Omnidawn, in advance of his forthcoming photography book Kanazawa Vacancy to be published by Chin Music in March 2027.
