New York, NY – Tanya Weddemire Gallery presents Without Boundarines, a new solo exhibition by Cameroonian artist Moses Salihou, opening on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 6:00 PM.
Based in Toronto, Salihou’s practice exists within the framework of The Black Atlantic, exploring the Diaspora, memory, migration, and the emotional connections that shape Black life across continents.
Without Boundaries brings together a compelling body of work where abstraction and figuration converge, highlighting the breadth of Salihou’s evolving visual language. At its center is his celebrated Bond Series, inspired by time spent in Cameroon following the passing of his father. During this period of mourning, Salihou witnessed profound moments of familial intimacy and care—his mother braiding the hair of her grandchildren, sisters beautifying themselves together, and everyday rituals that became acts of healing, love, and connection. These quiet yet powerful exchanges form the emotional foundation of the series, transforming ordinary moments into enduring visual narratives.
The exhibition also features a selection of landscapes that showcase Salihou’s signature use of richly layered expressive brushwork. Through thick applications of oil paint, he creates environments that feel both remembered and imagined, balancing gesture with atmosphere.
Complementing these works are a series of self-portraits that further demonstrate Salihou’s mastery of oil painting. Employing expansive abstract brushstrokes with restrained figuration, the portraits emerge through movement, texture, and color, inviting viewers to consider identity as something continually formed rather than fixed. Together, these works pay tribute to the artist’s technical command while expanding the possibilities of contemporary figurative painting.
For Tanya Weddemire Gallery, this exhibition marks an important milestone in a longstanding partnership. As one of the gallery’s longest-represented artists, Moses Salihou’s career has grown through years of thoughtful collaboration and sustained commitment. Salihou’s visibility increased following his participation in leading art fairs such as EXPO CHICAGO, SCOPE Art Show, and 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair with the Tanya Weddemire Gallery. Subsequently after receiving positive reception and press, his work has entered significant private collections.
About Moses Solihou
Moses Salihou is a Cameroonian artist based in Toronto whose thick, tactile application of paint creates a textural intensity that mirrors the layered complexities of the human spirit. Central to Salihou’s practice is his belief that human beings are composites of identities, experiences, beliefs, memories, and emotions. His gestural mark-making intentionally leaves facial features loosely rendered, allowing the portraits to become composites of many rather than the likeness of one. In this way, the viewer is not a passive witness but is invited to participate to recognize, interpret, and locate themselves inside the work. These rich surface effects provide Salihou’s paintings with dynamism, movement, and depth capturing the fluidity of identity and personhood. His works vibrate with presence. Salihou has exhibited throughout the United States and Canada, and his work is held in private collections globally including Europe, New Zealand, Africa, Asia, Canada, and the United States. In 2025, Salihou had a sold-out presentation at EXPO Chicago in 2025, showcased at Scope Art Show and 1-54 African Contemporary Art Fair NYC in 2026. In addition, his work was featured in Art in America printed edition of 2025, marking a powerful critical milestone in his career.
