Patricia Vernhes & Noirmoutier Present Other One, an Art and Sound Installation in the Desert - PR for Artists

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 2021

Patricia Vernhes & Noirmoutier Present Other One, an Art and Sound Installation in the Desert
Patricia Vernhes’ latest artistic project asks us to reconsider our relationship with the environment, objects, and ourselves

Yucca Valley, CA – In her first immersive art exhibition, artist Patricia Vernhes presents new sculptural works alongside live sound installations from her experimental audio project Noirmoutier at Mojave Flea Trading Post.

In Other One, Vernhes asks the fundamental question, “If you remove an object from its environment, will it be missed?” The sculptural work in this ongoing project—including heirlooms, natural elements, and found objects—are encased in plaster and epoxy in order to recast our understanding of memory, utility, and existence. This act of simultaneous exaltation and deconstruction turns found objects into shells of their former selves. By emptying them of prescribed meaning, Vernhes leaves room for a deeper understanding about our place in the world and the things we value.

The exhibition of sculptural works will be accompanied by live sound installations from Noirmoutier, an experimental audio project by Patricia and Nicolas Vernhes. The duo utilizes a variety of instruments, including a set of 20 binaurally tuned quartz bowls, synthesizers and analog tape delays, to create auditory experiences inspired by the laws of sound, hallucinatory resonance, and sound therapy. Their intuitive, instinctive approach is meant to draw listeners to the stillness of the desert they call home.

Together, Vernhes and Noirmoutier present an interdisciplinary exhibition that creates a ritualistic communion with the natural world that is at once deeply felt and surprisingly unfamiliar.

About Patricia Vernhes

Patricia Vernhes is a multi-disciplinary artist whose professional musical and visual paths have spanned  over two decades and under many monikers.

Born in Poland at the dawn of martial law, Vernhes grew up touring with her step father’s widely known punk rock band during some of Eastern Europe’s most radical turns in modern history.

Shortly after Poland began to transition from communism to democracy, she moved as a teenager to London, where she began her music education and career. Her debut solo album released by Sony Records in 1998 is considered the first major release to open an era of electronic pop music in Poland. During her London years she worked as a solo artist and went on to form the bands Children, Flykkiller, and Patti Yang Group. She also collaborated on over 20 film soundtracks.

Her current practice took another turn when she moved to the desert in Joshua Tree, California. As a steward of the land, her work is an ongoing conversation between the environment and memory through sound, painting, sculpture, and found objects often installed, collected, and exhibited on her property.

She currently lives and works in Joshua Tree, California.
