New York, NY – Franco-American artist Natale Adgnot debuts new sculptures in her solo exhibition Life Cycle of a Bird Brain at Sweet Lorraine Gallery, on view September 4 – 29, 2024, as well as in the exhibition Tentacular Threads at Kathie Halfin Studio as part of the 9th annual New York Textile Month, on view September 5 – 19, 2024.

On the heels of exhibiting work at Shelter Gallery in an exhibition Artforum recently included as a “must see” show in its art guide, Adgnot will present new mixed media fiber sculptures from her ongoing series Bird Brains, examining language, logical fallacies and cognitive biases. These sculptures use versatile  materials like thermoplastic, horsehair and cotton muslin to create textures, forms and surfaces that underscore the unique cultural expressions of textiles. These works also materially and metaphorically sew together various chapters of the artist’s life, including horsehair and leather from Texas; fashion prototyping fabric from Paris; sumi ink and washi paper from Japan; and thermoplastic in homage to the multiculturalism of New York.

Lidewij Edelkoort, Initiator, Editor, and Director of New York Textile Month, writes: “At a time when textile heritage is at a crossroads and centuries of tradition and knowledge are being compromised, the need arises to protect these endangered species in the same way we have come to defend our animal friends in the natural world; therefore we urgently need to discuss and talk about textiles again.” Adgnot’s fiber sculptures, embedded with language and symbolism, enter this same contemporary textile conversation.

Adgnot will exhibit 13 fiber sculptures in a new solo exhibition at Sweet Lorraine Gallery.

The title of the exhibition, Life Cycle of a Bird Brain, encapsulates Adgnot’s explorations into human fallibility and how bird imagery is ubiquitous in the English language: everything from black swan theory to the duck test, or phrases like “canary in the coal mine” to “birds of a feather.” The works in the exhibition are the newest iteration of such explorations, injecting new materials into the work as well as autobiographical materials.

The opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 12th, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.

Artist Talk: Saturday, September 21st, 2:00 – 3:00 pm

Tentacular Threads at Kathie Halfin Studio for New York Textile Month, September 5 – 19, 2024

A selection of Adgnot’s fiber sculptures from her series Bird Brains will be included as part of the 9th annual New York Textile Month at Kathie Halfin Studio.

The exhibition delves into the intricate relationship between hybridity, the experience of everyday, and the process of making to explore how desperate elements converge to create new narratives and experiences, featuring artists Natale Adgnot, Frid Branham, Rina AC Dweck, Kathie Halfin, Yudit Katz, and Elizabeth Tolson.

Artists in the show communicate hand-woven, sewn, braided, and crocheted narratives through haptic labor. Utilizing materials such as paper, raffia, hair, clay, discarded items, and found objects, they build bonds with their everyday surroundings. Through their work, these artists collectively emphasize the interconnectedness of lived experiences, natural environment and cultural narratives, creating a rich tapestry of sensory and conceptual engagement that bridges gaps in understanding of contemporary fiber art.

The opening of the show will be held on Thursday, September 5th, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm.

About Natale Adgnot

Natale Cree Adgnot is a Franco-American artist who uses abstract sculpture and installation to explore cognitive bias and logical fallacy. Best known for wall sculptures made of painted thermoplastic adhered perpendicularly onto panels, she increasingly incorporates a variety of materials that are emblematic of her personal history into her work.

Adgnot earned a BFA in graphic design in Texas and studied fashion in Paris. Her experience making garments for haute couture runways led her to focus on sculpture. While living in Tokyo, she began using thermoplastic (an artist-grade shrink plastic) to work three-dimensionally.

She has been featured in solo and two-person exhibitions in New York, Toronto and Tokyo. Group exhibitions include SPRING/BREAK, “Black & White” at BWAC juried by Jenée-Daria Strand of the Brooklyn Museum, and “Sacred Pause, Sacred Fertilizer” at the Nevelson Chapel. Adgnot is also the owner and director of the seasonal art gallery N/A Project Space. She lives and works in Brooklyn and New Paltz, New York.
