MAMA Salon Presents Maayan Sophia Weisstub:
The interdisciplinary artist reimagines what happens in domestic spaces in a new exhibition
London, UK – Interdisciplinary artist Maayan Sophia Weisstub explores domestic spaces in her new exhibition MAMA Salon Presents Maayan Sophia Weisstub in London. The exhibition is on view Oct. 26 – Oct. 31, 2024, with an opening reception on Oct. 26th, 5-7 PM.
While the domestic space has traditionally been seen as a place that confines women, MAMA seeks to reclaim the living room as a space for artistic expression and empowerment. In her new exhibition with MAMA, Weisstub’s work examines this domestic space by recontextualizing everyday objects within the home to confront the complexities of “what happens behind closed doors.”
The works in the exhibition include kinetic sculptures that “breathe,” a bed that evokes the image of bruised skin, an installation with a dining table and enmeshed chairs, fractured objects depicted in collages, and other interdisciplinary works. The exhibition underscores Weisstub’s ongoing explorations of duality, the body, space, and our relationships with objects.
MAMA Salon is a gathering of creative minds, fostering the exchange of ideas and artistic innovation. Committed to elevating the work of women-presenting artists and addressing the critical gender dynamics within the art world, MAMA will continue to function as a curatorial platform from the living room within the home, reimagined as MAMA Salon.
The concept of the salon dates back to 17th-century France, where the earliest salons were organized by women, referred to as “salonnières,” in their private homes. These gatherings initially centered on literary discussions and were attended primarily by poets, writers, and intellectuals.
By redefining the home as a site of creative exchange, MAMA Salon hopes to create new opportunities for contemporary artists to thrive and be seen in a more inclusive art world. MAMA Salon invites women-presenting artists to showcase their work in MAMA’s living room, continuing in a short-run format with the aim of highlighting greater women-presenting artists at MAMA HQ.
