curated by WhiteBox.LA in an additional gallery wing of the Desmond Tower

Los Angeles, CAInterreality hosts its second opening with an interactive dance avatar experience by artist Aya, live music by Randy Randall of NoAge, as well as an artist talk between Aya and curator, educator, and cultural producer Alice Scope, on November 18, 2023, 6 – 9 PM.

Additionally, as part of the opening reception, Interreality is collaborating with WhiteBox.LA to present Curt LeMieux: HEROES, an exhibition of minimal, puerile renditions of classic LP album cover art, on view in a gallery wing of the Desmond Tower.

About Aya’s ImmerseME

Aya’s ImmerseMe is a seamless fusion of movement and technology that captures each sway and step, crafting an animated echo that’s as unique as the moves it senses. Expressive potential unfolds in vivid detail here as dance is transformed into a visual symphony akin to that in Aya’s “Sankofa Seas.” With ImmerseMe, every move is an artwork, every moment an exhibit, in this interactive dance avatar experience.

Faith ‘Aya’ Umoh, at the intersection of art, dance, and AI innovation, defies the traditional bounds of artistic expression. A data scientist by training, poet by passion, illustrator, meditation teacher, and multimedia artist by craft, Aya’s work effortlessly bridges the traditional and the avant-garde.

About Curt LeMieux: HEROES

The second installment of renowned photographer Joshua White’s curatorial project, WhiteBox.LA presents Curt LeMieux: HEROES, a group of minimal, puerile renditions of classic LP album cover art. The works speak to LeMieux’s adolescent obsession with Rock & Roll imagery and his own blossoming teenage sexuality as he came of age on the outskirts of the rust belt in the late 70s. The album covers are sourced from diverse music genres. LeMieux’s subjects include artists ranging from Dusty Springfield and Frank Sinatra to Black Sabbath and Patti Smith. Curt LeMieux lives and works in Los Angeles.

About Interreality

Interreality, curated by artist and former Night Gallery co-owner Mieke Marple, bridges the traditional and digital art worlds through the presentation of works that span the physical-to-digital spectrum. The exhibition is produced by Steven Sacks, founder and director of bitforms gallery, and Aubrie Wienholt, founder of PR for Artists.

Interreality includes renowned digital artists such as pioneering artificial intelligence artist Refik Anadol and established traditional artists such as Mark Flood (whose paintings respond to internet culture and whose work is in the collection of MOMA Fort Worth). The exhibition also features work by artists whose practices are heavily analog, such as Cindy Phenix, and primarily digital, such as Alida Sun in order to capture the entire physical-to-digital spectrum.

Interreality is a continuation and expansion of the work bitforms gallery and PR for Artists have been doing for a combined 28 years, presenting artists engaged with new technologies with a sensitivity to physical space and embodied experience. This shared interest between Marple, Sacks, and Wienholt sparked the idea for Interreality, which they see as the apotheosis of their varied and nontraditional art careers.
