Homecoming: Leslie Lewis Sigler’s new solo exhibition explores memory shaped by inherited objects at Commerce Gallery
Leslie Lewis Sigler, Remember Where You Came From, 2026, oil on linen, 24 x 20 in
Lockhart, TX – Commerce Gallery presents Homecoming, a new solo exhibition by artist Leslie Lewis Sigler exploring how memory and family roles are mirrored by the inherited objects used to gather at table. The exhibition is on view June 5 – 30, 2026, with an artist’s reception on Friday, June 5th, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM, following a gallery open house from 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
Homecoming features 20 new paintings from Sigler’s ongoing series of portraits of inherited silver, copper molds, storied tablescapes and doilies. In our current era defined by speed and fragmentation these objects hold space to slow down and consider the nature of home. Beneath their stillness, these objects carry embedded stories: family dynamics, quiet tensions, the unspoken roles that shape a household. Each painting sets the stage for intimated rituals, charged with anticipation of the arrival of guests whose presence can only be inferred through the objects themselves.
The depicted objects—marked by worn finishes, intricate designs and accumulated traces of use—form a visual language that speaks to belonging, difference and the ways individuals relate to one another through the objects they live with. Beyond the prelude to an unseen gathering, Sigler’s mediation on, and composition of, each serving piece references an archetypal member of the human family, mirroring the characters who will use them. When closely observed, the reflective surfaces of silver and copper both reflect and distort, holding a multitude of identities at once. These shifting reflections echo the evolving roles one navigates within the home across time and place.
Homecoming also marks a return to Texas for the artist. Sigler spent her childhood in central Texas among the objects and settings that she depicts in her still life paintings. Now, returning to the region years later, her relationship to them has deepened with time, imbuing them with new perspective and meaning. What were once the backdrop of her childhood have now become significant artifacts of memory, past lives and the ways in which objects and settings form sites of emotional response.

About Leslie Lewis Sigler
Leslie Lewis Sigler’s still life paintings of silver and copper heirlooms collect treasured family objects as families of objects. In Sigler’s work, an extensive collection of objects, histories, and emotional relations is brought vividly and suggestively to life. Each piece has its own unique story to tell, moments of polish and moments of tarnish. A series of portraits thus emerges whose enduring power and beauty reflect the depths of human character and the profound connectedness of shared history.
Domestic objects made of precious metals—flatware, vessels, molds, cutlery—have a kind of eternal life. They may age beyond recognition, but polishing them will soon recapture their original luster. Attending to the elegance of their form and the precision of their decorative flourishes, as well as to the play of light off their surfaces and even the shadows they cast, Sigler renders these singular objects in all their varied richness, elevating them beyond their mere functionality through a signature combination of near-photographic realism and painterly abstraction.
In this way, the work is about both aesthetic immediacy and symbolic significance. Just as Sigler herself is often reflected—visible, even if distorted—in the ever-changing patina of the cherished heirlooms she paints, so the objects come to reflect enduring and captivating histories. As they have been passed down from generation to generation and put to use at family gatherings, imagine all those who have been reflected in their gleam, brought together by the objects’ connecting force around the table. Or perhaps they were rediscovered at an estate sale or thrift shop, salvaged from the purgatory of resale, for new personal and family histories to be expressed. On the whole, Sigler’s paintings stand as invitations to see life reflected as part of an evolving lineage that crosses generations and geography, connecting us all through time and space.
