Daniel Sackheim presents enigmatic noir photography in black-and-white exhibition at Leica Gallery Los Angeles
Los Angeles, CA – Television and film director and photographer Daniel Sackheim presents photographs from his series Unseen in a black-and-white photography exhibition at Leica Gallery Los Angeles, on view May 30 – July 15, 2024.
A celebration of monochrome imagery, the new exhibition at Leica Gallery Los Angeles highlights the dramatic aura of contemporary black-and-white photography. Sackheim’s work in the exhibition, taken from his series Unseen, combines street photography and cinematic qualities rooted in his acclaimed film and television background and interests in film noir, especially poignant as the genre regains attention and recognition with the recent success of shows like Netflix’s new hit limited series Ripley. A recent feature in Deadline describes Sackheim’s “intriguing landscapes” from this same series as follows: “[they] evoke a time of classic film of the Film Noir period.”
Unfolding around Los Angeles, much of Sackheim’s work in Unseen examines the enigmatic nature of urban landscapes, narrative, and how the “decisive moment” lauded by Henri Cartier-Bresson is perhaps more fleeting and haunting than it is revelatory. Stylistic cues, such as Sackheim’s prominent use of stark lighting and shadow, imply not only a cinematic sensibility but also dramatize everyday patterns and behavior with mysterious intent.
“This body of work explores life in the shadows of an urban jungle,” says Sackheim. “My inquisitiveness is rooted in a need to discover the secrets that lie hidden deep within even the most forbidding corners of the city. To excavate the past, to stare into the faces of ghosts long forgotten. Inspired by the visual aesthetic of Film Noir, this work explores isolated fragments of subjects once there but now gone, as a means of shining a light on what is hidden, if only for an instant.”
The exhibition at Leica Gallery Los Angeles debuts on the heels of Sackheim’s ongoing exhibition with Iconic Images Gallery in London, a showcase in Photo London, and photographs featured in Projecting LA, projected 80-feet wide and three stories high in downtown Los Angeles.
Sackheim’s work at Leica Gallery Los Angeles will be exhibited alongside photographers Michael Ansell, Julia Dean, Greg Hatton, and Winterstone.
