London, UK / Los Angeles, CA – Television and film director and photographer Daniel Sackheim presents Bright Lights, Big City, his first exhibition with Iconic Images Gallery  in London, alongside a showcase of work in Hiding in Plain Sight, an exhibition with Wienholt Projects and Iconic Images in Los Angeles during Frieze Week.

Sackheim’s work combining street photography and cinematic qualities, rooted in his acclaimed film and television background, explores the enigmatic nature of urban landscapes, capturing the hidden stories and emotions that reside within the shadows of bustling city streets. Unfolding around Los Angeles, much of Sackheim’s work examines isolation, social anxiety, and how the “decisive moment” lauded by Henri Cartier-Bresson is perhaps more fleeting and haunting than it is revelatory. Stylistic cues, such as Sackheim’s prominent use of stark lighting and shadow, imply not only a cinematic sensibility but also dramatize everyday patterns and behavior with mysterious intent. Sackheim’s work unpacks the distinct visual lexicon of the architecture and atmosphere throughout Los Angeles that stands in contrast to the sun-drenched, glitzy romanticization often associated with the city and Hollywood tropes.

“My work is an exploration of a facet of life in a city known as the birthplace of film noir and my obsessive curiosity rooted in a need to discover secrets that remain hidden just beneath even the most forbidding corners of the city. To excavate the past, to stare into the faces of ghosts long forgotten.” – Daniel Sackheim

Bright Lights, Big City: Iconic Images Gallery proudly presents Daniel Sackheim’s evocative street photography in European debut

Iconic Images Gallery is thrilled to announce the European debut of acclaimed photographer and award-winning film director Daniel Sackheim, featured as part of their first exhibition of 2024: Bright Lights, Big City. This showcase, running from March 7 to May 25, will feature Sackheim’s profound and moody monochrome street photography and near-deserted urban scenescapes.

‘Bright Lights, Big City’ is an expansive journey through the metropolitan experience of the 20th and 21st centuries, capturing the glamour, grime, connection, and isolation that define urban life. Daniel Sackheim, an esteemed name in both photography and film direction, turns his insightful gaze to the streets of US cities. His monochrome images are a study in contrast, capturing the city’s vibrant life against the backdrop of its enigmatic shadows.

“We are honoured to be hosting Daniel Sackheim’s first European exhibition,” noted Carrie Kania, Creative Director at Iconic Images. “His work is a poignant, resonant exploration of urban life that brings the unseen drama of the city darkly into view.”

Bright Lights, Big City will be on display from March 7 to May 25 at the Iconic Images Gallery Piccadilly, 16 Waterloo Place, SW1Y 4AR, London.

Hiding in Plain Sight: Wienholt Projects presents an exhibition showcasing Daniel Sackheim’s photography during Frieze Week in Los Angeles

Wienholt Projects is pleased to present an exhibition featuring Daniel Sackheim alongside Preston Douglas and artists from Iconic Images Gallery, including Greg Brennan. The works exhibited in Hiding in Plain Sight, the title of which comes from Sackheim’s latest series of work, present aspects of each artist’s practice that underscore their overall examinations of contemporary culture through the interlinked realms of photography and fashion. Each artist employs the tools and materials of these industries that often intentionally distort aspects of reality to instead reveal that not everything is as it seems on the surface.

Hiding in Plain Sight is on view February 28 – March 27, 2024 at The Desmond Tower, 5500 Wilshire Blvd. Suite 150, Los Angeles, CA, 90036. There will be an opening reception on February 28, 2024, from 7:00 – 10:00 PM.
