It was approximately seven years ago that Aubrie Wienholt and I began experimenting with the PR for Artists idea. Although the company had represented films, authors, directors and musicians in the past, representing fine artists was a new endeavor. The focus for PR for Artists was organic. The concept was to have artists representing artists. My initial foray into the arena was as a writer. Fine artist, Rachel Tribble and I created an exhibit together called the Resurrection of Light. She did the paintings I wrote short self-contained stories that corresponded not necessarily in theme but strove to evoke a similar emotion. The exhibit showed in Los Angeles and Florida. The irony was that whereas I was focusing on my client’s campaigns, I really did not give the exhibit the PR launch it deserved. And here, I run a PR firm.
Aubrie and I initially worked together on one of my plays. It was then we began to discuss and explore the need for a subsidiary company to the main firm that specializes strictly in representing artists. Aubrie is a singer, songwriter and classically trained pianist. She is also Vice President of PR for artists. Over the years we have now represented a number of artists some at the inception of their career, some mid-career and others firmly established. But all need a firm that is focused on artists that is dedicated to helping them succeed in their career. What we believe makes us unique is that we can view an artist’s needs both as artists and as public relations consultants. Sounds like a contradiction, but it’s not. What many artists need, as much as guidance in marketing and PR, is the permission to market. Many have been taught that it is an anathema, which can be a disastrous mindset for an artist.
Our approach is to have artists to use their creativity in order to turn their marketing into an art and to have fun with it.
With that in mind:
On December 11th the PR for Artists Gallery will present a unique Art Exhibition in the heart of Los Feliz. Joshua Shultz, who is featured in The Huffington Post as “LA’s Rising Director and Photographer”, will be showcased at this unique pop up art event, which will be held next door to Los Feliz’ storied Skylight bookstore and theatre company. The event will feature Shultz’ photography for sale, live music, and spirits. It will also feature the premiere of Aubrie Wienholt’s new music video, directed by Shultz.
On February 26th at 7 p.m. at the Sidewalk Studio Theatre, in Toluca Lake California, PR for Artists will present a PR for Artists Seminar covering the nuts and bolts of how (and why) artists can market their art. This is no regular seminar, but a combination or theatre, lecture and Q&A.
