Our mantra at PR FOR ARTISTS is for artists to be as creative with their marketing as they are with their art. The goal is to turn marketing into an art. Warhol certainly transformed his marketing into an art form. He confounded the status quo, doing so in a way that was creative and innovative. He played with it, broke the rules, and produced the unexpected. Picasso was a marketing master and Dali certainly understood the concept of marketing as an art. I realize these might seem like extreme examples, but they certainly illustrate the point, and whereas I doubt it’s necessary to go so far as taking your anteater for walks in New York, I think you catch my drift.
The bottom line is you don’t have to be outrageous or flamboyant in your PR and marketing and you want to take care not to slide from interesting to ostentatious. Each artist will have his or her own approach and comfort level, but to succeed, marketing is not an option, it is a necessity. Focus on being creative, thought-provoking and noteworthy both in your art as well as in your marketing and presentation. Successful musicians have known this for years. Bowie and Hendrix were masters of both.
With that in mind on December 11th, PR FOR ARTISTS will present photographer/director Joshua Shultz in his first major public art show in Los Angeles. This unique, one night exhibit will feature his photography as well as showcase his film work. Premiering will be his new music video as well as his new commercial.
Shultz will showcase his art in this multimedia presentation, but the event itself will be both a creative expression and celebration. Although best known for his photography, Shultz is rapidly making inroads into the film world. At the event he will be world premiering the music video of an up and coming indie singer/songwriter, and one of our own artists here at PR FOR ARTISTS, Aubrie Wienholt, as well as offering teasers of his upcoming film projects.
To quote a recent Huffington Post article: “With a Canon, natural light and two lenses, Shultz creates photos that are crisp, focused and highlight nuance details. His goal is to capture an image that is nearly impossible to look away from. In many of his photographs, one can easily see a comfort and a “dance” that comes with knowing your subjects while developing an artistic, unbreakable rhythm… Each detail of movement, wrinkle of expression and contrast of environment is a practical and compelling charge of emotions. And even when shot in black and white, he seems to make his subjects glow.”
