René Romero Schuler Exhibits a New Series of Paintings Exploring Authenticity and Identity with 812 Royal Gallery at Art Miami

René Romero Schuler, Sunflower, 2026, oil on canvas, 72 x 60 in

Miami, FL – 812 Royal Gallery presents The Armour of Grace, a new series of paintings by artist René Romero Schuler exploring authenticity and identity at Art Miami, on view December 1 – 6, 2026.

Best known for her oil paintings depicting ethereal, expressly feminine beings in rough textures and monochromatic color, Schuler’s figures often verge on abstraction to examine the nature of imperfection. Built through layers of applied materials that she scrapes, carves and incises by hand, her paintings bear the physical marks of their making. These surfaces evoke the experiences that shape a person over time while these deliberately obscured figures allow viewers to locate their own histories and emotions within the work.

In The Armour of Grace, Schuler explores what it means to embody an authentic sense of self in an increasingly image-conscious culture. Her faceless figures forgo the recognizable features and polished appearances through which identity is so often presented and interpreted. Instead, their presence emerges through gesture, texture and the accumulated traces of the artist’s hand. The resulting paintings suggest a different kind of strength, one grounded in the capacity to embrace all of one’s vulnerabilities and lived experiences.

The presentation marks the latest chapter between Schuler and 812 Royal Gallery, following Un Femme Forte earlier this year. Where the earlier exhibition established a dialogue around feminine strength, The Armour of Grace further explores the role of authenticity in shaping our identities. At Art Miami, Schuler will exhibit alongside artists Joseph Adolphe and William Dunlap, each offering a materially distinct approach to self-expression and authenticity.

About René Romero Schuler

René Romero Schuler is an American painter and sculptor who creates powerful images that speak to the complexities of the human condition and the spirit that connects all human beings.

Feminine figures are a constant in Schuler’s art, which she claims is equal parts self-portraiture and depictions of the range of emotions she has experienced. Her challenging childhood imbues her work with an appreciation for the universal yet essentially intimate struggles and triumphs of human existence. In her quest for a feeling of connection, Schuler speaks to global and societal issues that impact us all.

Schuler’s paintings and sculptures are purposely semi-abstract and textured, rendering them open to interpretation by the viewer. Their power lies in the layers of applied materials scraped, carved and incised by hand and the elusive quality of the figures – beautiful but symbolic of the scars and flaws that shape individuals.

Currently represented by galleries across the U.S., Canada and Europe, Schuler has had major exhibitions throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia, and has work included in the permanent collections of numerous museums and institutions.

Schuler’s art and selected essays and poetry are collected into published works: René Romero Schuler: Life and Works, 2013; René Romero Schuler, 2016 and René Romero Schuler, 2019, now available in its second edition. A fourth book, Ladies, published by G Editions NYC was released in 2024. Her new book, 100 Paintings, which includes an introductory conversation with Cydney Payton (former director and curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art – Denver), was published by Jasper Press in March 2026.
