Miami, FL – Tanya Weddemire Gallery returns to INSCOPE Miami for the fourth consecutive year with a two-woman presentation of artists Candice Tavares and Brooke Fierce Bronner. Both women take the mission of reflecting softness and luxury in the day-to-day lives of their subjects. They embody blackness as a shared cultural language—not performative but organic to experiences and upbringing. The presentation juxtaposes vastly different mediums from wood carving and sculptural assemblage to fine art painting. Albeit diverse, they align to tell a greater story, one prescribing ease and rest to a community of cultural preservation that historically never knew such a luxury.
The sculptural works of Candice Tavares are born from a laborious process of wood sourcing, cutting and sculptural assemblage that serves as a mirror to her viewers. Black women, often forced to assimilate into foreign beauty standards are now the pedestalized subject, as Tavares forces the medium to assimilate into their natural likeness. Her process in wood and stain glass sourcing is meticulous; more than half of her process is finding various species that reflect a large variety of melanated shades and hues. The goal is to leave the sculpture as natural as the women she seeks to embody.
Brooke Fierce Bronner captures the play and whimsy of autonomy, how it shows up when one has unlimited currency of unbound time and free will through Black Leisure. In her paintings, tennis is the chosen vehicle to communicate status and skill, while her Martha’s Vineyard multiple figurative paintings speak to the gathering and joy of her friends and their children. Her black subjects engaging in the pastime shows that all forms of pleasure can be explored, no matter prejudice. The movement in her pieces capture the subjects as they should always be light, energetic, uplifted and joyful.
Tanya Weddemire Gallery has always championed artists whose works serve a purpose of inspiring the viewer to look deeper for the hidden beauty that rises to the surface with intentional inspection. This year’s INSCOPE presentation beckons collectors and onlookers to slow down, to let intentionality and stillness narrate Joy, Gathering, Memory and Cultural Inheritance
About Candice Tavares
Candice Tavares is a wood artist born and raised just outside of Philadelphia, PA. Her art is a celebration of Black beauty, love and culture that highlights the diversity in our hair texture and styling as well as skin complexion. Candice was formally educated in engineering and pharmacy, but her true passion has always aligned with the freedom of creativity. She was encouraged to experiment with different mediums during Saturday morning art classes and introduced to woodworking while helping her dad build and fix furniture in his woodshop. Years later she was able to combine that knowledge and experience to develop a style of art that felt uniquely hers. Though woodworking has often been classified as a more masculine art form, she does not shy away from using it to depict images of softness and femininity. She sees her art as an opportunity to celebrate Black beauty, history and resilience, while challenging the negative narratives about blackness that she sees perpetuated in healthcare and media. Her art is intended to remind viewers of their inherent beauty and value just as they are, just how God made them.
About Brooke Fierce Bronner
Brooke Fierce Bronner is a contemporary painter based in Washington, DC, whose work explores the intimacy of everyday rituals, the quiet choreography of human connection, and the beauty of Black leisure. Through scenes of domestic life, friendly competition, and cultural memory, her paintings capture how Black people gather, talk ish, play, and make one another better through proximity, love, and shared rhythm. Her work offers an intimate view of Black life beyond the narratives most often presented to the world—not as something exceptional, but as something deeply familiar. In these ordinary moments of ease, joy, and belonging, Bronner makes visible a richness of experience that has always existed, even when it has gone largely unseen. The absence of these images from the larger cultural imagination should not be mistaken for an absence of these experiences from Black life. Bronner has exhibited at Thread at Union Market, Zenith Gallery, Transformer, Chela Mitchell Gallery, and Umbrella Art Fair, Street Theory Collective as well as with Long Gallery on Martha’s Vineyard. At Tanya Weddemire Gallery, her work has been presented in BLOOM WHERE YOU ARE and BUYART WITHIN REACH, connecting her practice with new audiences and collectors. Her work has been featured in Essence and Artsy editorial, and her collaborations include Warby Parker and West Elm.
