The Echo of Our Voices: Nick Brandt’s new exhibitions at AIPAD, Art Dubai, and throughout Europe, examine climate breakdown through displaced Syrian families in Jordan
F’taim and Family, Jordan, 2024
New York, NY & Dubai, UAE – Photographer Nick Brandt presents his monumental series The Echo of Our Voices around the world this spring, including with Waddington Custot at Art Dubai (April 18 – 20, 2025), followed by a group exhibition at Waddington Custot (April – May, 2025) in Dubai, and a solo exhibition with Gilman Contemporary at AIPAD Photography Fair (April 23 – 27, 2025) at Park Avenue Armory in New York.
The Echo of Our Voices is Chapter Four of The Day May Break, a global series featuring humans and animals impacted by climate change and environmental destruction. In this newest chapter of the project, Brandt depicts displaced Syrian refugees as “human islands” in the Wadi Rum Desert in Jordan to highlight the resilience, surreality, beauty and ongoing struggles of these families amidst war and environmental disaster. These sculptural compositions create visually captivating and symbolic pedestals for those in society who are typically unseen and unheard.
Photographed in 2024, these families fled war in Syria between the years 2013 and 2015, and are now living lives of continuous displacement in Jordan, which is considered to be one of the most water-scarce countries in the world. The situation forces these families to resettle several times a year, moving their tents to where there is available agricultural work and there has been sufficient rainfall to enable crops to grow.
“Spread across the planet, there is a common link between the countries in which I have photographed this series so far: They all are among the countries that are the least responsible for climate breakdown. Their global carbon emissions have been tiny compared to industrial nations. Yet, like so many other poorer countries in the world, they are disproportionately harmed by its effects. The grim irony is that many people in these countries are the most vulnerable to the calamitous consequences of the industrial world’s ways.” – Nick Brandt
With the recent fall of the Assad regime in Syria, these families—who Brandt and his team continue to stay in touch with and are available for interviews—are currently waiting for evidence of sustained stability before making the decision to return home.
In addition to Art Dubai and AIPAD, The Echo of Our Voices will also exhibit throughout Europe this year, including with Willas Contemporary at the Milan International Photography Fair in Milan, Italy (March 20 – 23, 2025), Galerija Fotografija, Ljubljana, Slovenia (March 31 – September 7, 2025), and Polka Galerie in Paris, France (September 2025).
The Echo of Our Voices was partly funded by Gallerie d’Italia Museum, Turin. A major exhibition of all four chapters of The Day May Break will open there in March 2026.
