Burlington, ON – Fiber artist and sculptor Sienna Martz presents a new sustainably-made immersive installation in the exhibition Of Wonders Wild and New at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. The exhibition is on view February 1 – March 30, 2025.

Martz’s new work, A Portal Blooms in the Cradle of Night, is a sustainably-made immersive installation that invites viewers to step inside the artwork and experience a vividly imagined alternate world. The installation combines tactile soft sculptures, soundscapes, and lighting design to engage the senses and provoke a sense of wonder and exploration while fostering a deep connection between viewers and their surroundings, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.

This vibrant “textile mural” grows beyond the walls and onto the floor and is made of secondhand clothing, organic plant fibers, and recycled felt. The artist’s use of secondhand clothing embodies her sustainability initiatives and a powerful commentary on community and togetherness, weaving together the diverse experiences and identities of the garments’ past wearers.

A Portal Blooms in the Cradle of Night encourages visitors to contemplate their role within the collective tapestry of life; inspiring a deeper appreciation for both sustainability and the rich diversity that unites us all; and to reflect on their own experiences and the possibilities that lie just beyond their perception.
