Brendan Meadows’ Alterity Revels In The Human Form & The Fusion of Experimental Representation
The new solo exhibition, Alterity, from photographer Brendan Meadows exhibits at The Cardinal Gallery
Toronto, ON – Photographer Brendan Meadows, best known for pushing the conventional expectations of photography, particularly portraiture, debuts new work in his solo exhibition, Alterity, at The Cardinal Gallery. The exhibition, featuring the likes of Grimes, Leon Bridges and Saul Williams, is both an earnest celebration of the human form and a subversive experimentation of portrait photography.
In Alterity, Meadows interrogates the construction of the self and how one is conscious (or not) of the ways one chooses to be represented. For many of the images in this series Meadows uses alternative photographic techniques—like gum bichromate, dating to the early 19th Century—oscillating between experimentation and historical processes.
These images, many of which are manipulated with the Sabatier effect to be simultaneously positive and negative, mirror Meadow’s own relationship between subject and photographer, observer and observed. In doing so, Meadows inverts our expectations of portraiture by depicting selves that are not fixed or fully formed nor are they meant to be. Ultimately, Meadows’s work blurs the boundaries between traditional and fine art portrait photography.
The exhibition includes silver gelatin selenium-toned lith prints and the first solarized digital output to be used for the photographic medium. Historical traditions of printing have been fused with Lambda technology for a truly unique result. The collection also includes tri-toned gum bichromate prints of extraordinary quality.
The exhibition will run June 3, 2021 – July 18, 2021. More details below.
